This is a detailed overview how WIT can be used to stream video files through the network. So, one can sit on the balcony and watch some movies which are stored on a local server in the basement.
In the following, a Linux system is used as server and a „Samsung S6 Edgde“ is used as mobile client. The movie is transmitted via wireless LAN.
Server: On the server, the button „Settings“ in the tool bar opens the program settings. WIT has to be configured correctly to allow the streaming of local files.
Server: If you scroll down in the program settings, you will find the section „Sharing“. The option „Multimedia files“ has to be actived to allow the streaming of a local video/audio file. But be aware: by this, you activate the sharing of the entire folder AND its sub folders. There will be no further request message if a peer starts streaming. So, decide carefully what you share with others.
Client: On the mobile you find the same tool bar like on the desktop version. The workflow for starting a new transmission starts by a click on „Stream“.
Client: On the remote machine „snake“ another WIT instance is running. It has to be selected as origin of the stream.
Client: The peer „snake“ provides 3 different media sources: a locally connected USB camera, a DVB-S receiver and local multimedia files.
Client: There are several multimedia files available on the peer „snake“. One has to be selected here.
Server: After a remote file was selected on the mobile, the data transmission starts immediately. On the server side, a new player will be open which contains a black background an a short hint about the streaming progress.
Client: On the client side, an additional player will be show which starts with the text „Analyzing input“. This indicates that the stream format is currently analyzed to determine the needed codec parameters.
Client: After a short waiting time, the actual video is shown and the sound starts as well. No further interaction is needed – the movie will be played continuously until its end is reached.
Client: A „double click“ on the video switches the display to „fullscreen mode“. To leave this mode another double click is needed. In both modes the audio level can be adjusted on the right hand side. All available controls can be show again by a short click on the video. A longer click/press shows also the extended controls for the player.
